Level 2 - 2 Day Training - Refresh, Reinforce and Consolidate - FRENCH IMMERSION (Grades K-2)

*French Immersion Grades 3+ should register for Core/FSL (Levels 1, 2 or 3)

Pre-requisite:
Because you will need to know the step one gestures to do the activities in this workshop, if you fit into any of these categories, we recommend that you repeat Level 1 - Beginner.  
  1. If you do not know all the gestures from a Step One kit.
  2. You have not actively used AIM for the past two years.
  3. You have not implemented a Step One kit in full.


In this interactive two-day workshop, you will  learn how to take the AIM into all areas of your immersion day and curriculum, while also having the opportunity to put your skills to work by teaching actual immersion lessons to a group of teacher-participants! 

This is a NEW workshop for AIM teachers! It is designed to provide extensive hands-on experience with a few aspects of AIM that teachers often need to review and reinforce. It is a preparatory workshop for success with Level 3 Up your Game with AIM workshop, which we are modifying to meet the needs of more experienced AIM teachers.

Day 1 - Developing further oral language skills:
In these sessions you will:

  • Improve your understanding of and practice with the basic Gesture Approach techniques
  • Explore various strategies for establishing and maintaining target language only in the immersion classroom
  • Receive extensive hands-on practice with TLSE/spontaneous gesturing, to improve your proficiency with ongoing gesturing with your class
  • Learn how to use authentic moments throughout the day to introduce, teach and practice new vocabulary
  • Learn how to adapt and develop daily routines in order to maximize oral production time for all students
  • Learn how to maximize language use through basic oral questions and other activities

Day 2 - Moving forward with the literacy program
In these sessions you will:
  • Look at how you can adapt language manipulation activities for use in center activities
  • Learn how to use story time to build story retelling skills
  • Learn how to use conversation partners to get students speaking in French to each other in a variety of contexts
  • Explore literacy activities in the AIM Immersion Guide

You will receive recordings of the sessions to view at your leisure for 90 days!

    Workshop details

    1. Hands-on basic Gesture Practice -7:30am-8:40am PST / 10:30am-11:40am EST with Wendy Maxwell, Creator of the AIM

    Prerequisite: For teachers of Core French/FSL or Immersion students who have taken Level 1 Beginner AIM Training.

    In this 70-minute interactive session, we will:

    • review important high-frequency gestures, practise teacher-led self-expression, and how to vary your gesture reviews,
    • demonstrate how to conduct an 'Opposites Review' and some targeted work with gestures relating to grammar.
    • Wendy will also take requests based on the needs/interests of the group!

    2. Story Extension and Book Publishing - 8:50am-10:00am PST / 11:50am-1:00pm EST with Wendy Maxwell, Creator of the AIM

    Prerequisite: For teachers of Core French/FSL/Immersion or Spanish students (Grades 2 and up) who have taken Level 1 Beginner AIM Training.

    In this 70-minute session, we will focus on:

    • how to develop ideas for this activity from the beginning of your Kit
    • live demonstrations so that you may experience the process
    • sharing sample student stories for discussion

    2. Hands-on Grammar Practice - 10:10am-11:20am PST / 1:10pm-2:20pm EST with Edite Sammons, Chief Curriculum Consultant

    Prerequisite: For teachers of Core French/FSL or Immersion students (Grades 2 and up) who have taken Level 1 Beginner AIM Training.

    In this 70-minute session, we will focus on:

    • gesturing targeted grammar concepts including les infinitifs and le passé. 
    • demonstration of AIM's Corrige les erreurs activity and                                     
    • the effective use of the error correction code.

    4. Ideas for Organizing your AIM classroom and Maintaining Home-School Communication -  11:30am-12:40pm PST / 2:30pm-3:40pm EST with Lisa Venne

    Prerequisite: For teachers of Core French/FSL/Immersion or Spanish students who have taken Level 1 Beginner AIM Training.

    In this 70-minute session, we will focus on strategies to stay afloat and achieve more with your students than imagined, including:
    • how to stay organized while travelling between classes
    • keeping up with and logging communication home
    • collecting valid observations/notes
    • staying on top marking while teaching to multiple grades/IEP's in an AIM classroom.

    5. Hands-on Practice with AIM Readers 12:50pm-2:00pm PST / 3:50pm-5:00pm EST with Pauline Galea

    Prerequisite: For teachers of French who have taken Level 1 Beginner AIM Training.

    In this 70-minute hands-on workshop, we will:
    • demonstrate how to use Pauline's new readers series 'Les sons' with your students, both to teach the emergent readers in early immersion classes and to help older students in grades 3, 4 or 5 and who are new to the language, recognize sounds that are particular to French.
    • provide hands-on practice to show how to effectively use AIM strategies such as des questions totales et partielles and
    • provide hands-on practice with activities such as Vrai ou Faux ?, Qu'est-ce que tu vois dans l'image ? and Décris l'image to develop oral language skills in short, simple activities that may be done anytime with very little preparation!
